‘Noctua #1’ (No Sparkles Here): Advance Comic Book Review

Noctua

NoctuaWhen vampires try to go legit, the illicit trade in captive humans goes underground and a new force threatens the undead. Noctua tells the story of the killer of vampires as he sets out to cut as wide a swath through the undead as possible.

There is a lot to like about this comic. The story definitely explores some interesting nooks and crannies in vampire lore. There is also some fun tension between the vampires that want to go straight (or at least appear to) and the vampires give in to their natures. There were some cool, little character moments and some interesting plot details.

The art has an energy that I found refreshing. There is a looseness and excitement that doesn’t feel like another copy of Hellboy or 30 Days of Night. There is some loss of detail in this, but that isn’t really a big deal. The overall effect is of a fast paced and dirty city brimming with corruption and the undead.

I should point out that there are a few nits that need to be picked. There is some information lost in the roughness of the art. Not too much, but it is still missed. There were also two cops introduced that didn’t seem to do much for the narrative. They only showed up for two pages and seem to have more to offer to the story in later issues, but those two pages are precious in a first issue and they might have been better introduced in the second issue.

All in all, this is a neat, little comic that shows a lot of promise. There are a few things keeping me from recommending this one without reservation, but I look forward to see what happens next.
