‘Todd, The Ugliest Kid on Earth #1:’ Advance Comic Book Review

TODD 1It’s gotta be hard to be the ugliest kid on Earth, but Todd seems to take it all in stride. He is upbeat and friendly to everyone, but this is not Pollyanna. For one thing, Todd’s town is the haunt of a maniac killer. Also, everybody else seems to be immune to his charms. But, those charms seemed to have worked on me. Despite the fact that there are precisely zero other characters in this comic that are even slightly sympathetic, I enjoyed this book a great deal.

The art probably has something to do with this. The characters all look like the most terrible versions of themselves. You can actually see the meanness dripping off the face of the inept detective. The thing that I find interesting about the art is that, while every other character seems to wear their inner ugliness on their faces, Todd (who you might remember is the ugliest kid on Earth) wears a bag on his head all the time. The result is that we never see his ugliness at all.

The writing is as sharp and funny as anything I’ve read all year (ed. groan). Err . . . as sharp and funny as anything I have read in a while. The book is structured like a mystery, but it is clear that this isn’t what we are going to get. Instead, what we get is Pollyanna, as told by David Lynch and somebody else that is just as bizarre. Sorry, that analogy got away from me. The point is that this is a weird and dystopic view of the suburbs before the maniac killer enters the picture.

All in all, I really enjoyed Todd, The Ugliest Kid on Earth. It is funny, interesting, and well-paced. The art alone would be worth the price, but the story is also great. This one is an easy recommendation, and if you are reading this before Wednesday, January 16th, and live in LA, come to the signing event at Golden Apple Comics.
