‘Frank Cho: Women Book 2’ – Advance Hardcover Review

Frank Cho Women 2There are few books whose title so clearly tells you exactly what you are going to get as Frank Cho’s new art book, Women Book 2. (I’m looking at you, Catcher in the Rye.) The book is devoted to Cho’s comic depictions of beautiful ladies. The artwork is split between collecting various comic covers, pinups of a character from his webcomic, and (mostly) tasteful nudes and semi-nudes.

If there is a single unifying theme in this collection, it would have to be the playful attitude. My personal favorite image is of The Astounding Wolfman and an unconscious vampire slayer who is obviously not a parody of any specific character. There is also a pinup of a beautiful lady astronaut and her partner, a dinosaur in a spacesuit.

So, yeah, it is occasionally very silly.

I am not usually that interested in pinup style art books, but this one impressed me. The art itself is phenomenal. To paraphrase Geof Darrow’s introduction, the women on display are at once impossibly perfect and perfectly natural. The art here feels less like a creepy exploitation of women and more like a loving and incredibly idealistic study of the artist’s favorite subject.

This book is obviously not for everybody, but if you are looking for an interesting and frequently funny exploration of the fairer sex, then this might just be what you are looking for.

Four Curvy Beauties out of Five.
