‘Quince’ Celebrates Latinx and Hispanic Voices and Heritage with New ComiXology Opportunity

Since 1968, the United States has celebrated the history, culture, and influence of Latinx and Hispanic American citizens whose families came from Mexico, Spain, Central America, and South America.  The contributions of these individuals have enriched and influenced our society and culture for generations, giving voice to a myriad of ideas, perspectives, experiences, and sources of imagination.  In honor of Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month (taking place between September 15-October 15, 2018), Fanbase Press and the creators of Quince wish to continue that sharing of ideas, imagination, and culture by offering Issue #1 of the Eisner Award-nominated series for free on ComiXology in both English and Spanish.

Quince is a 15-issue, creator-owned comic book series that follows a year in the life of Lupe, a 15-year-old girl who discovers that her quinceañera brings with it a super cool party . . . and superpowers.  Emphasizing diversity, family, and female empowerment, Quince’s creative team includes sisters Kit Steinkellner (writer - Sorry for Your Loss, Z: The Beginning of Everything) and Emma Steinkellner (artist - The Okay Witch, Pow Slam Sparkle), creator Sebastian Kadlecik (Penguins vs. Possums), and translator Valeria Tranier (The Maze Runner, Friday Night Lights, Doctor Who).

Quince has its origins in an appreciation of culture,” says creator Kadlecik.  “I wanted to do a project that celebrated my family's heritage. I wanted my nieces, my mom, my wife, and all of my family to be celebrated and to see positive depictions of themselves. It was my hope that this story would reach across generations and boundaries and unite readers in a celebration of our shared Latinx culture.  I hope you enjoy it. (I hope your abuela enjoys it, too!)”

The series was originally released digitally through ComiXology, issue by issue, in English and Spanish.  The collected English-language trade paperback is available for sale through Fanbase Press, Amazon, and ComiXologyQuince is also the winner of the 2018 IPPY Award and has been nominated for a 2018 Eisner Award, the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity, and the Excellence in Graphic Literature Award.

Join us in celebrating the sharing of voices and culture by visiting ComiXology during Latinx / Hispanic Heritage Month and enjoying the first issue of Quince for free.  On behalf of all of us at Fanbase Press and Quince, we hope that Lupe’s story will provide an opportunity to unite readers – across generations and languages – in honoring Latinx and Hispanic culture.
