Programming

Fanbase Press and its staff and creators will be hosting a number of thought-provoking panels throughout the week.  Below is the schedule of panels throughout the week of SDCC:

THURSDAY

4:00 p.m.Creator Panel: Why I See Myself in Comics - Authors/creators talk about the discoveries that come after their book is published and released into the world. What are the biggest surprises that come from readers who identify with their work? What sort of impact does this have on how they, as creatives, perceive the original work? What sort of stories did they read that had a profound impact on how they write and why they choose the stories they tell? Featuring Sebastian Kadlecik (Quince), Christina "Steenz" Stewart (Archival Quality), Jenni and Matt Holm (Babymouse), and Sina Grace (The Li'l Depressed Boy). Moderated by Colleen Bement.  San Diego Central Library

7:00 p.m.Women on the Dark Side - Not all female artists/creators are about unicorns and glittery vampires and silly pseudo-bondage. Some women create truly dark and challenging art and content, with just a touch of humor and whimsy. Whether it's comic books, novels, or art, these women are creating content that connects with our deeper, darker side. Featuring Susan Lee (Shadow of the Knight), Megan Hutchison (Vesna, Rock Stars), Nancy Holder (Wicked Series), and Lisa Morton (Ghosts: A Haunted History); moderated by Barbra Dillon (Fanbase Press).  Room 25ABC

FRIDAY

7:30 p.m.The Arkham Sessions: The Psychology of Robin, Batman's First Sidekick - Even lonely, brooding superheroes need sidekicks! Witness the fun, fascinating, and in-depth psychological analysis of the original and most famous sidekick to Batman, Dick Grayson. With a special spotlight on panelist-and longtime voice of Robin and Nightwing- Loren Lester (Batman: The Animated Series), clinical psychologist Dr. Andrea Letamendi and co-host Brian Ward bring their mental health and pop-culture podcast back to San Diego Comic-Con.  Room 5AB

SATURDAY

10:00 a.m.Fanbase Press Presents: The Art of Trading Cards - Themed collector cards have been around for over 100 years, originally packaged with cigarettes. By the 1950s, bubble gum was packaged with trading cards that began to spotlight media-based subjects such as popular television shows and films. Trading card sets typically include sketch cards, which feature the work of established and aspiring artists. Led by Michele Brittany (editorials manager, Fanbase Press), panelists Daniel Cooney (Rogue One), Chris Thorne (DC Comics' The New 52), and Ashleigh Popplewell (The Walking Dead) talk about their experiences working with Topps, Cryptozoic Entertainment, and other companies to create trading cards that celebrate some of our favorite franchises. Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, Grand 9

11:30 a.m.Comics Arts Conference #10: Chasing Captain America - Physiology and Philosophy from Stem Cells to Socrates - What if we could really create Captain America-should we? We are now approaching the point where the Super-Soldier Serum and Vita-Rays meet the reality of bioengineering. Thanks to the convergence of biology, engineering, and technology, we can now alter our abilities through surgery, pharmaceutical enhancement, technological fusion, and genetic engineering. E. Paul Zehr (Chasing Captain America: How Advances in Science, Engineering and Biotechnology Will Produce a Superhuman), Mark D. White (The Virtues of Captain America: Modern-Day Lessons on Character from a World War II Superhero), Daniel H. Wilson (Amped, Robopocalypse), and G. Willow Wilson (Ms. Marvel, Alif the Unseen) discuss the physiology and philosophy of superhumanity with moderator Andrea Letamendi (Under the Mask).  Room 26AB

3:00 p.m.Fanbase Press Presents:  Latinx Comics Creators and ReadersQuince is a 15-issue comic book series being released in English and Spanish about teenager Lupe who discovers she has superpowers at her quinceañera. Comadres y Comics is a podcast hosted by three Latina women hoping to highlight the role that Latinos have in the comic book industry.
