ABOUT QUINCE

Quince is an Eisner Award-nominated, 15-issue, bilingual comic book series that follows a year in the life of Lupe, a 15-year-old girl who discovers that her quinceañera brings with it a super cool party . . . and superpowers. Emphasizing diversity, family, and female empowerment, Quince’s creative team includes creator Sebastian Kadlecik (writer/artist – Penguins vs. Possums), Kit Steinkellner (writer – Sorry for Your Loss, Z: The Beginning of Everything), Emma Steinkellner (artist – The Okay Witch, Pow Slam Sparkle), translator Valeria Tranier (The Maze Runner, Friday Night Lights, Doctor Who), and graphic designer Oceano Ransford (The Sequels, A Geek’s Guide to Cross-Stitch, Rikki).

Quince: The Definitive Bilingual Edition oversized hardcover collects the full English and Spanish editions of the series, as well as forewords by Gloria Calderón Kellett (Executive Producer/Showrunner/Director/Actor, One Day at a Time) and Peter Murrieta (Executive Producer/Showrunner/Writer, Mr. Iglesias), an academic essay by Frederick Luis Aldama (Distinguished University Professor and Eisner Award-winning author of Latinx Superheroes in Mainstream Comics), a study guide by Dr. Theresa Rojas (Professor, Modesto Junior College), an art gallery Javier Hernandez (El Muerto), Sabrina Cintron (The Witches’ Grimoire, La Borinqueña), Malena Bonilla (Twitter: @Malbondesigns, Instagram: @malbondesigns), and Jose Cabrera, and a heartfelt letter to the reader by creator Sebastian Kadlecik.

Quince has its origins in an appreciation of culture,” says creator Kadlecik. “I wanted to do a project that celebrated my family’s heritage. I wanted my nieces, my mom, my wife, and all of my family to be celebrated and to see positive depictions of themselves. It was my hope that this story would reach across generations and boundaries and unite readers in a celebration of our shared Latinx culture. I hope you enjoy it. (I hope your abuela enjoys it, too!)”

Quince: The Definitive Bilingual Edition was named a winner in the 2021 Foreword INDIES Book Awards, the 2020 Independent Publisher (IPPY) Awards, as well as the second place winner in the 2020 International Latino Book Awards and an Honor Book in the Virginia Library Association’s (VLA) 2020 Graphic Novel Diversity Awards. In addition, the series was the winner of the 2018 IPPY Award and has been nominated for a 2018 Eisner Award, the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity, the Cybils Award, and the Excellence in Graphic Literature Award.

ABOUT NUCLEAR POWER

Nuclear Power is a darkly poignant alternate history of the Cuban Missile Crisis written by Desirée Proctor & Erica Harrell (Deadshot: Mercy, 2017 DC Comics New Talent Workshop) and illustrated by Lynne Yoshii (DC’s Gotham Garage, 2017 DC Comics New Talent Workshop).  Furthering the series’ efforts to stress the tenets of democratic society, demand equity for its citizens, and encourage healthy and informed civic participation, the upcoming trade paperback to be released on October 19, 2021, will feature education-focused bonus content, including a foreword by Dr. Katie Monnin (writer – Teaching Graphic Novels, Diamond Bookshelf’s “Katie’s Korner”) and a study guide by Dr. Stephen J.C. Andes (Associate Professor of History – Louisiana State University / writer – Zorro’s Shadow). The bonus content will also offer readers, educators, and librarians the opportunity to utilize the collected Nuclear Power trade paperback as an educational resource for examining challenging topics like disinformation and xenophobia, providing opportunities for greater discussion and understanding.

For Nuclear Power writers Desirée Proctor and Erica Harrell, calling upon past events to educate future generations was vital not only to the content of the story, but to its very inspiration.  “The story is inspired by our mothers’ experience trying to Americanize after the Cuban Missile Crisis, when Cubans were attacked in this country for being the ‘enemy,'” Proctor and Harrell noted.  “We hope that people take away the idea that we shouldn’t fear others for being different; that we shouldn’t automatically try to destroy what we don’t understand.  Every alt-history story begins with real history, and Nuclear Power is no different.”

Desirée and Erica’s work will also soon be seen in Marvel’s Voices: Comunidades, a comic which spotlights Latinx heroes and creators in the Marvel Comics Universe.
